I am 20 years old and come from a family of five. My father is unemployed and my mother is a registered nurse; both my parents furthered their studies. Both my sisters have finished higher education, one in journalism and the other (who is married and does not live in the house anymore) has a degree in teaching and medical biosciences. I strive to one day finish my degree and succeed in my field, thus bettering the world. In my spare time I enjoy reading, cooking and baking (these are used as stress relievers).
I attended Mondale High School and am now in my second year studying BSc Molecular Biology and Biotechnology at Stellenbosch University. I have always loved the sciences. When my older sister fell ill and it was discovered that she suffers from a chronic disease, I decided I would like to do something in the science field – so that maybe one day, if God is willing, I would find a cure for such diseases or help treat them. Also, when I was in school I realised I enjoyed my Life Sciences classes the most. I then job shadowed a doctor and a biochemist and found that I would much prefer being a biochemist. I would like to become a research scientist and be a medical biochemist.
Receiving financial support from the MPBRMT helped to take the pressure off my family and was really a big help with regard to payment in order for my results to be released. I am very grateful to have received this bursary, it has helped me very much and has lessened my stress considerably. This allows me to focus more on my studies and less on how my fees will be paid. I aim to hopefully receive more financial aid in the future in order to pay off my studies.
