Maria Mqolo
My name is Maria Mqolo. I am 19, and a first-year student at the University of the Western Cape (UWC). I attended Cedar High School. I stay in Philippi with my mom, sister and two younger brothers. My mother is a single parent and it has been very difficult for her to raise four children alone. I am doing a BA degree, studying Industrial Psychology, Geography and Environmental Studies as well as Language and Communication Studies. I am grateful for the opportunity to study further as I am first in my family to matriculate, and go to university. This is an honour for me. It would not have been possible without the bursary from the Trust. The Mitchell’s Plain Bursary and Role model Trust has done an amazing job. The Trust has helped me attend lectures every day by covering my transport costs. The Trust means the world to me as it is a support structure that I can count on. I see and hope for a bright future and it all starts with education as the saying goes: “education is the key to the future”.
