Who we help
The Mitchell’s Plain Bursary and Role Model Trust supports young people who would like to pursue further and tertiary education, but have difficulty in doing so because of their financial situation.
Our recipients are Grade 12 learners who:
- have potential, are financially deserving and need assistance with funding;
- reside in Mitchell’s Plain; and/or
- attend one of the 17 high schools in Mitchell’s Plain.
The Trust assists with registration and/or tuition fees for studies at institutions such as the University of Cape Town, University of the Western Cape, University of Stellenbosch, Cape Peninsula University of Technology and Further Education and Training Colleges.
The Trust currently provides assistance with registration fees and partially cover tuition to a maximum value of R25 000. Recipients who are successful in their studies may reapply for further support for the next year. This will be granted on merit based on performance.
Our Recipients
We have listed learners we have assisted since the establishment of the Mitchell’s Plain Bursary Trust.
The Mitchell’s Plain Bursary and Role Model Trust provided financial assistance to 83 matriculants since it was established, thus facilitating their access to tertiary or further education.
11 of these successful candidates were given bursaries by partner companies who either paid for their full or partial tuition.
Each recipient of a bursary from the Mitchell’s Plain Bursary and Role Model Trust commits to do three things:
- Speak at their former school at least once a year, to motivate others to follow in their footsteps.
- Establish an alumni association at their school where none exists or strengthen the existing one.
- Initiate a tutoring program at their school with the support of NGO’s working in the sector.
